Welcome to the Amapiano Dance Workshop at Absalon!
“Make me sweat, make me hotter, make me lose my breath, make me water!”
If you can sing along to Tyla’s song, you’re already familiar with Amapiano – a music and dance genre rooted in South Africa’s townships, such as Soweto, south of Johannesburg.
In this workshop, you’ll get the chance to explore the versatile and energetic movements that define Amapiano. Zozo will introduce you to foundational moves like Pounce, Mnike, and Zekethe, and explain their meanings.
Amapiano comes from the word “iPiano” in the Nguni language spoken in South Africa, and it’s not just music and dance – it’s a lifestyle. The genre emerged around 2010 as a blend of deep house, jazz, lounge vibes, and Gqom, with its distinct piano sound and bassline.
You don’t need to be an experienced dancer to join. The most important thing is that you love moving to great music and expressing your own unique style and vibe.
Zozo’s motto:
“It’s not what you do, but how you do it. Bring the vibe, and I’ll bring the fun!”
